Boy George Charged With False Imprisonment

Musician Boy George was formally indicted Tuesday on a charge of falsely imprisoning a 28-year-old man. It is the latest in a recent string of legal problems for the openly gay performer.

The 47-year old singer and DJ, whose real name is George O'Dowd, was been ordered to appear before a court on Nov. 22. The charge stems from an incident last April where a male escort claimed to have been chained to a wall in George's London apartment.

Auden Carlsen, 28, claims to have met the singer on a popular British gay dating site. He said that he agreed to go to George's apartment to pose for photographs for a fee of about $750 and on the stipulation there would be no sex... (read more)

Boy George just can't catch a break:

'Autograph' cost Boy George £36,000

Gobsmacked Boy George signed an "autograph" for a fan while DJ-ing at a gay nightclub - only to be told it was a £36,000 writ. The gay entertainer was on the decks at 3am amid hundreds of revellers, when a lurking solicitor sidled up to the DJ stand.

Amid the writhing bodies and pumping music the lawyer, disguised as a clubber, handed the pop star a piece of paper. Thinking it was an autograph-hunting fan, the DJ duly obliged with a quick signature - which will now cost him £36,000 - the cash he owes after being sued by a club promoter.

The document was a Statutory Declaration, in legal terms once it is delivered or "served", the receiver must pay his debts or be declared bankrupt.

A High Court judge in Manchester had ordered Boy George, real name George O'Dowd, to pay the cash to Cheshire promoter Kasia Saleh for pulling out of a concert. He was given until November 2 to pay the money, but failed to come up with the cash. The statutory demand served in the nightclub gives him 21 days to pay up or face bankruptcy action. (read more)

Like he doesn't have enough to worry about, with the drugs and the whole chaining up whores thing. I think it's a little unfair to get him to sign a legal document in that way, but it's starting to get pretty obvious that he doesn't have very good lawyers. It also amazes me how much the British pound is worth, these days (the fine is about $77K US).

Back on tour for the first time in a decade, Boy George had some choice words regarding everyone's new favorite train wreck:

"I love Amy Winehouse. My favourite thing was seeing her going into Shoreditch police station (in connection to a bribery plot) because that's where I was nicked. It's obviously the pop star cop shop. She looks as it she should be in 'Hairspray', the pencil skirt, the beehive, always slightly dizzy. She reminds me of myself in the early days of Culture Club. She really inspired me to sing again. For me, the measure of a great singer is whether they make me cry. I love George Michael's voice but he never made me cry. Amy makes it sound effortless, but she's not faking it. It comes down to a complete package, feeling it, doing it, living it." (Towleroad)

If that's not a screaming "Seal of Disapproval" for your lifestyle, I don't know what it. It's like being compared to a "young Gary Busey/Jeff Conway." For better, or mostly worse, Busey already has a son who looks enough like his former self to scare children, and Conway had the decency not to reproduce.

George delivers some really sarcastic, cynical wit to an SFgate interviewer.

Q: You've had your tabloid stuff. George Michael is passing out behind the wheel on the streets of London. Adam Ant was last seen waving a pistol around a pub in a cowboy hat. Why does it feel like all my favorite singers from the '80s are self-destructing?

A: Well, I admire the fact that you've set the tone right away. I understand that I will be asked such questions, and that's fine, because I have refurbished my horizons and self-destruction is no longer an option. I can't talk for the other George, although he has just finished a major tour, which suggests the asleep-at-the-wheel situation was a brief excursion from sanity. Adam Ant has mental-health issues, and that is very different and more serious than the sort of self-destructiveness that myself and George Michael were embroiled in. So, talking purely for myself, I can tell you that my head is firmly screwed back on - the right way - and I am a far saner human being than I have been in a long time, if not forever...

Singer Boy George was sentenced to 15 months in jail on Friday after being convicted of falsely imprisoning a male escort by handcuffing him to a wall in a London apartment.

British Judge David Radford said the 47-year-old former Culture Club frontman, whose real name is George O'Dowd, was guilty of "gratuitous violence."

O'Dowd's lawyer said his client and the escort had both behaved like "drug-crazed idiots" and that O'Dowd's substance abuse problems were a contributing factor... (read more)
